Business Summary

Woodhouse Spa franchisees establish and operate day spa businesses offering a range of services such as massage therapy, facials, pedicures, manicures, and body treatments. These spas also sell various retail products, all operating under the "Woodhouse Day Spa," "Woodhouse Spa," and "Woodhouse" brand names and business system.

Corporate History

The Woodhouse SPAS, LLC was initially incorporated in Texas on March 21, 2003, as The Woodhouse SPAS Corporation. In June 2020, it underwent a corporate restructuring and converted to a Texas limited liability company. Woodhouse Spas began offering franchises for its day spa businesses on August 21, 2003. Currently, Woodhouse Spas does not directly operate any of its own spas; instead, it is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Woodhouse Gathering, LLC, which acquired all equity ownership interests in July 2020. Woodhouse Gathering, LLC also owns separate entities that operate four company-owned spas in San Antonio, Texas, and Colorado. The ultimate parent company is Radiance Holdings, LLC.

Training & Support Program

Franchisor Assistance

Woodhouse Spas provides pre-opening assistance to franchisees, including access to site selection guidelines and assistance, prototypical design plans, and lists of approved suppliers. Franchisees also receive an initial training program and on-site opening assistance, with one site visit included in the initial franchise fee. After the spa opens, Woodhouse Spas provides ongoing support by conducting periodic operational evaluations, administering an advertising fund, and offering advice and written materials on managing the spas. The company may also make System merchandise available for purchase, provide updated lists of approved suppliers, and offer additional training programs. Franchisees gain access to any proprietary software programs developed for the system.

Ongoing Support

After their spa opens, Woodhouse Spas provides continuing support to its franchisees through periodic operational evaluations, administration of an advertising fund, and distribution of advertising and promotional materials for local marketing. The company also offers advice and written materials on managing and operating the spas, and provides updated lists of approved suppliers. Additional training programs are offered at the franchisor's discretion, and franchisees have access to proprietary software programs for the system. The franchisor also offers ongoing management of technical platforms and business tools, including licensing, development, and implementation of systems, for a monthly Technology Management Fee. Woodhouse Spas also has a Franchise Advisory Board that advises on various matters, including advertising.

Franchise Requirements

Ideal Candidate Profile

Woodhouse Spas requires the franchisee's Operating Principal to maintain at least a 25% direct or indirect ownership interest in the franchise. The Operating Principal must meet the franchisor's qualifications and be approved. Unless a General Manager is appointed, the Operating Principal must dedicate their full time and best efforts to supervising the spa's operations and cannot engage in other businesses. If a General Manager is appointed, they must also be full-time, and the Operating Principal remains ultimately responsible. Franchisees are also required to staff their spa with at least one registered massage therapist, one licensed esthetician, and one licensed nail technician, all of whom must maintain current licenses and registrations.

Territory Size Requirements

Woodhouse Spas grants a Protected Area with a maximum radius of six miles around the franchisee's spa. However, the actual size and shape of this Protected Area are determined by various factors such as natural or man-made barriers, population density, income levels, and the number of households and businesses in the specific trade area. In urban centers with higher population density, the Protected Area may be significantly smaller. If a development agreement is signed, the territory for multiple spas may be defined as a portion of a city, a single or multi-county area, or another specified geographic area.

Staffing Notes

The Woodhouse Spa requires franchisees to designate an Operating Principal who must meet the franchisor's qualifications and be approved. This individual is ultimately responsible for the business. The Operating Principal for all Woodhouse Spas under a single franchisee must be the same person. The Operating Principal must dedicate full-time effort to supervising the business, unless a General Manager is appointed and approved by The Woodhouse Spa. A General Manager, if appointed, must also devote full-time effort. For spa services, each Woodhouse Spa location typically requires at least one registered massage therapist, one licensed esthetician, and one licensed nail technician, all of whom must maintain current licenses and registrations. The franchisee is entirely responsible for all employment aspects, including hiring, firing, discipline, scheduling, and compensation of staff. Employees must be made aware that the franchisee is their employer, not The Woodhouse Spa. Before opening, the Operating Principal and General Manager must successfully complete the initial training program. Successor or replacement personnel in these roles must also undergo this training. The Woodhouse Spa may also require management-level employees to attend additional training, informational programs, or annual conventions, for which fees and travel expenses may apply. The franchisor may also specify a dress code for employees. Franchisees must use approved suppliers for employee background checks and may be required to use a designated supplier for investigations in cases of suspected safety protocol breaches.
