Business Summary

Roly Poly operates units that offer rolled sandwiches and other food and beverage products, available for eat-in, take-out, and delivery. Roly Poly's business targets customers looking for high-quality, reasonably-priced fast-food sandwiches in busy areas like retail districts, restaurants, entertainment venues, or near densely populated work and residential zones, such as office buildings, apartment complexes, or university campuses.

Corporate History

Roly Poly was formed on December 3, 1996, as a Georgia limited liability company. It acquired its initial assets from a predecessor company, Roly Poly Rolled Sandwiches, L.L.C., which had operated a unit in Atlanta, Georgia, from October 1996 until mid-1998, when it was sold to a franchisee and subsequently liquidated. Roly Poly began offering franchises to operate units in January 1997.

Renewal Conditions

To renew their Roly Poly franchise, franchisees must not be in default under their Franchise Agreement and must have complied with all its terms. They must pay a renewal fee equal to 50% of the then-current initial franchise fee and agree to remodel and refurbish their unit to meet Roly Poly's current standards and design specifications. Franchisees must also provide written notice of their desire to renew between 180 and 365 days before the initial term expires and sign Roly Poly's then-current form of franchise agreement, which may have different terms, including an updated fee structure.

Training & Support Program

Franchisor Assistance

Before a Roly Poly unit opens, the franchisor provides guidelines for site selection, information on unit layouts, standards for equipment, signs, and improvements, and details on potential product and service sources. Roly Poly also provides pre-training for the franchisee and their designated manager, along with 12 days of grand opening training at the franchisee's unit for the franchisee, manager, and selected employees. Franchisees receive a Confidential Operating Manual and initial accounting forms. Once the franchise is operational, Roly Poly provides ongoing assistance including updates to the Roly Poly Menu, advice on local advertising and marketing campaigns (potentially via its website), and may conduct annual training sessions or meetings (attendance may be mandatory for up to two business days per year). Roly Poly offers a 24-hour phone number for advice, general guidance on operating problems and new methods, suggested retail prices for menu items (though franchisees are not required to adhere to them), opportunities to participate in group purchasing programs, and periodic inspections of the unit.

Training Location

A designated Roly Poly location for pre-training, and the franchisee's own unit for grand opening training.

Ongoing Support

After opening, Roly Poly franchisees receive ongoing support including updates and modifications to the Roly Poly Menu, advice on local advertising and marketing via the franchisor's website, and potentially annual mandatory training sessions or meetings (up to two business days each year). Roly Poly provides a 24-hour phone number for advice and guidance, general advice on operating problems, new techniques, or improved operating methods. Franchisees also receive suggested retail prices for Menu Items and the opportunity to participate in any volume discount group purchasing programs. Roly Poly conducts periodic inspections of units to ensure system uniformity. For mandatory ongoing training or meetings, Roly Poly covers the costs of materials and instruction, while franchisees are responsible for their travel, room, board, and employee wages. Additional training requested by the franchisee or deemed necessary by Roly Poly due to operational problems will incur a fee of $215 per instructor-day plus travel costs.

Franchise Requirements

Ideal Candidate Profile

Roly Poly targets owner-operators who ideally have prior experience in the fast-food or restaurant industry, though this experience is not a strict requirement and is merely considered beneficial. Roly Poly requires that either the franchisee themselves or an approved manager must directly supervise the unit's operations. If the franchisee is a business entity, an individual shareholder, partner, or member approved by Roly Poly must devote their full time to operating the unit.

Territory Size Requirements

Roly Poly agrees with franchisees on a 'Delivery Area,' which is defined by current guidelines designed for a single unit to serve with timely delivery of fresh products. This area is determined based on local population density and traffic patterns, such as a zip code area or a one-mile radius. While Roly Poly will not grant an overlapping delivery area to another franchisee or company-owned unit, the overall territory is not exclusive, and Roly Poly retains the right to exploit commercial opportunities in 'Parks' (enclosed shopping malls, airports, stadiums, etc.) within the delivery area.

Staffing Notes

Roly Poly estimates that franchisees will need approximately two full-time equivalent employees, though this number can be lower if the franchisee works in the unit themselves, or higher if the unit requires more staff or overtime wages. Franchisees or a designated manager must directly supervise the unit's operations. Units must be open from at least 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., seven days a week (excluding official state or federal holidays). Roly Poly does not provide personnel or security-related policies or procedures, leaving these decisions to the franchisee. Designated managers are required to enter into non-disclosure and non-competition agreements with the franchisee.
